WHEN YOUR HOME NEEDS MORE POWER

Is 100 Amp Service Still Enough for Your Home's Electrical Needs?

INCREASE HOME ELECTRICAL CAPACITY

Planning a 200 Amp Service Upgrade? Start With the Electrical Load.

A 100 amp to 200 amp upgrade increases the electrical capacity available to support a home's current and future power requirements when that additional capacity is needed.

Crowe Electric can evaluate your existing electrical service and the equipment you plan to add before determining whether a 200 amp upgrade is appropriate for your property.

ELECTRICAL CAPACITY PLANNING

What Determines Whether You Need a 200 Amp Upgrade?

The answer depends on more than the number printed on the panel. Crowe can review your existing electrical service along with current and planned loads to help determine the appropriate capacity for your home.

EXISTING SERVICE

Current Electrical Capacity

Start by identifying the capacity of the home's existing electrical service and the equipment currently being supplied.

NEW ELECTRICAL LOADS

What Are You Adding?

EV chargers, electric HVAC, hot tubs, appliances, workshops and other equipment can increase the amount of electrical capacity your home needs.

FUTURE PLANNING

Future Electrical Demand

If more electrification is planned, it can make sense to consider upcoming electrical loads when evaluating service capacity.

THE RIGHT SOLUTION

Panel or Service Upgrade?

More breaker space and more electrical service capacity are not necessarily the same thing. Crowe can evaluate what your project actually requires.

BEFORE UPGRADING TO 200 AMPS

Tell Crowe What Your Home Needs to Power.

A service upgrade should be planned around the electrical demand of the property. Tell Crowe about your existing equipment as well as EV chargers, HVAC systems, hot tubs, additions, workshops or other loads you plan to install.

Reviewing those needs together helps determine whether your existing electrical service is sufficient or whether additional capacity should be considered.

Planning more than one major electrical project? Include your future projects during the service review so Crowe can consider the combined electrical demand. i

Can't speak highly enough of the service received from Kris and the team from Crowe. Fast, neat, professional in all ways, and clearly had the knowledge to do the job correctly. Would recommend (and often have recommended) Crowe to friends and neighbors. This is the fourth job Crowe has done for us, and both were excellent. Will come back to Crowe for anything we need to have addressed in the future.

Customer service is terrible. I called because their work crew accidentally came onto my property and cut the power to my house when they were supposed to be working across the street. No harm, no foul, power was restored. However, the girl who answered hung up after stating they weee working across the street. I called back and she insisted I was wrong, that they were never at my house and didn’t turn off the power. They did. That’s not how you handle complaint calls. I have no idea if they do good work, but I can definitely say I will not be using them after that interaction.

I designed a built in buffet in my dining room. This included removing the center chandelier and replacing with recessed lights and wall sconces . The job also included new electrical outlets for beverage frig and built- in outlets for my countertops. Andrew helped pick out the perfect ones to match my hardware of brushed brass. Absolutely beautiful! Liam and Chris came multiple times to accomplish this and I have to say , they were so reassuring with my decision making and so professional and neat. These electricians are used to working in existing homes and have full respect with leaving your home just the way they found it! I enjoyed doing this project with Crowe and also have to give them top credit for great communication with the girls who schedule and make sure everything goes seamlessly! I’m very happy I found them and wish them lots of success with their business! Top notch! Don’t look any further! Thank you Crowe for making this vision I had come to light! No pun intended! 😊

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

100 Amp to 200 Amp Service Upgrade FAQs.

Common questions about residential electrical service capacity and upgrading from 100 amp to 200 amp service.

What is a 100 amp to 200 amp service upgrade? +
A 100 amp to 200 amp service upgrade increases the electrical service capacity available to the home when additional capacity is required for current or planned electrical loads.
How do I know if 100 amp service is not enough? +
The appropriate service size depends on the electrical loads in your home. If you are adding major equipment or several new electrical loads, Crowe can evaluate whether the existing service has adequate capacity.
Does every home need 200 amp electrical service? +
No. Not every home requires 200 amp service. The appropriate capacity depends on the property's existing electrical system and its current and planned loads.
Do I need 200 amp service for an EV charger? +
Not necessarily. The charger requirements, existing electrical service and other household loads should be evaluated before determining whether a service upgrade is needed.
Can a heat pump require an electrical service upgrade? +
Adding electric heating or cooling can increase household electrical demand. The new equipment's requirements should be evaluated with the home's existing electrical loads to determine available capacity.
What other projects can increase electrical demand? +
EV chargers, electric HVAC equipment, hot tubs, workshops, additions, major appliances and multiple new electrical loads can all affect a home's total electrical requirements.
Is a 200 amp panel the same as a 200 amp service upgrade? +
Not necessarily. Panel equipment and the home's overall electrical service capacity are related but are not automatically the same project. Crowe can evaluate the existing system and determine the appropriate scope.
Should I consider future electrical loads? +
Yes. If you expect to add EV charging, electric HVAC, appliances or other substantial loads, tell Crowe during the evaluation so those future requirements can be considered.
How do I request a 200 amp service upgrade? +
Call Crowe Electric at (781) 757-4443 or submit the service-request form on this page. Explain your existing electrical service and any additional loads you are planning.
